Key or key combination

What it does
Hold Option or Alt key during startup Display all bootable volumes (Startup Manager)
Hold  Shift  key Perform Safe Boot (start up in Safe Mode)
Hold C during startup Start from a bootable disc CD or DVD
Hold T during startup Start in FireWire target disk mode
Hold N during stratup Start from NetBoot server
Hold X during startup Force Mac OS X startup (if non-Mac OS X startup volumes are present or if you previously booted from OS 9 on the same volume)
Hold Command-V ; -V Start in Verbose Mode
You can use key combinations to start up the computer in either single-user mode or verbose mode.
These may be used for troubleshooting or software development.
Hold Command-S; -S Start in Single User Mode
Hold Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete during startup Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (CD, etc.)
Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
